About Independence Monument

Steel and glass monument of 2001 in the Słoneczne estate in Szczecin, by a group of four designers.

The Independence Monument stands in the Słoneczne estate in Szczecin, at Jasna 105, about 50 metres south of Rubinowy Staw. It is a modern composition of steel and blue glass, unveiled in 2001.

Authors and construction

The design was prepared by an informal group made up of Jerzy T. Lipczyński, Przemysław Biryło, Tomasz Flejterski and Wojciech Kokowski. The foundation stone was laid on 1 September 1998, and the monument was unveiled on 20 December 2001. The initiators and builders were Colonel Stanisław Białek, chairman of the Civic Committee for the Construction of the Independence Monument, and soldiers of the 5th Engineer Regiment from Szczecin-Podjuchy.

The form of the monument

Three monumental slabs, inclined towards one another, lean against each other at the top and symbolise the three Polish Republics (Rzeczpospolite). In the north slab a denarius of Bolesław the Brave, the prototype of the Polish emblem, is set in a “window”. In the middle, widest window of the stele can be seen the manuscript of the Mazurek Dąbrowskiego, and the third, narrow window with a blank page signifies the future. The windows are made of blue glass, which is meant to symbolise the continuity of independence thought.
