Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard

Rynek Staromiejski 2-4, 73-106 Stargard, Stargard
About Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard

Municipal museum in tenement houses and a guardhouse by the Old Town Market Square, with a branch in the Basteja and archaeological collections.

The Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard is a municipal cultural institution based in Baroque tenement houses and a former guardhouse at Rynek Staromiejski 2-4 and in the Basteja by the Weavers' Tower. The museum also looks after the Pyrzyce Gate and the Red Sea Tower.

How the museum came about

The present museum opened in 1960 in the Pyrzyce Gate. In 1966, after the reconstruction of the west frontage of the Market Square, it moved to the guardhouse. In 1978 a branch was opened in the Basteja with militaria, hunting and military weapons. After the renovation of the Basteja building in 2013 a department devoted to the history of Stargard up to the 1920s was created there, and on 22 May 2013 the museum took its present name in connection with the change of profile. The first museum in the town, the Heimatmuseum, operated from 1908, and most of its collections were taken in 1945 to Greifswald.

What to see

The collections include archaeological finds from the county, numismatics, works by local artists and incunabula. The museum also has a library of about 10 thousand volumes on Stargard and West Pomerania. According to the museum's website, the Basteja hosts the permanent exhibition “Stargard - a place with history”, from the late Middle Ages to the 1920s, and in the tenement house at Rynek Staromiejski 3 a temporary exhibition on Stargard's estates is shown. The website also mentions an escape room in the Basteja.

The defensive walls next door

The museum lies in the centre, near the town hall, and the Basteja stands by the Weavers' Tower. A walk along the fortifications is easy to combine with the museum, because it also looks after the Pyrzyce Gate and the Red Sea Tower.
