About Open-Air Museum in Wolin

A medieval open-air museum of 2008 in Wolin with ramparts, a palisade and huts modelled on early medieval Wolin, the venue of the Festival of Slavs and Vikings.

The Open-Air Museum in Wolin is a medieval open-air museum on Wolińska Kępa island, within the boundaries of the town of Wolin. It is run by the association Centre of Slavs and Vikings "Wolin-Jomsborg-Vineta". It opened on 7 April 2008. According to the centre's website it lies on the bank of the Dziwna River.

What stands here

In 2008 there were 13 structures on display that refer to the early medieval buildings of Wolin. The structures are encircled by defensive ramparts and a section of palisade with a gate and a small tower. Over time the number of huts grew: in 2011 one of 25 huts was destroyed by fire, and in 2014 two more burnt down. Plans also included, among others, the hut of a moneyer, a potter, a fisherman and an amber worker, as well as a medieval port.

Demonstrations and the festival

From time to time the open-air museum holds demonstrations of old crafts and re-enactments of fights between medieval warriors. The Festival of Slavs and Vikings is held here every year, and the centre's website also lists the Gathering of Slavs and Vikings and experimental archaeology workshops. Films have been shot at the open-air museum several times, among others for Polish Television and the History Channel.

Visiting

The centre's website promises "a journey in time to the era of sagas, sea discoveries and the golden age of Wolin". There are guided visits, a virtual guide, a "360 Walk" and a bicycle hire.

The open-air museum lies close to the town centre. Nearby are the Andrzej Kaube Regional Museum, the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas and Wolin Port.
