A municipal museum in Kamień Pomorski with archaeological finds, the early history of the town, cathedral treasures and the Kamień Capacitor exhibition.
A municipal museum in Kamień Pomorski that presents archaeology, the early history of the town and cathedral treasures. Its seat is a building opened in 2015 in the so-called Dominican Quarter, at Adama Mickiewicza 34, not far from the Cathedral Estate.
The beginnings of the present museum go back to 23 June 2006, when an exhibition of monuments found in the attic of the cloisters was opened in the chapter house of the cathedral. The Town Council established the institution formally in 2009. In 2009-2015 its seat was the manor of the Episcopal Curia, known as the Bishop's Palace. An earlier regional museum, which had operated since 1967 in the Church of St Nicholas, was closed down in 1991.
The collections include archaeological finds from the Neolithic, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (stone tools, pottery, urns, weapons, boat fragments, bricks and stove tiles). The museum's website also lists Bronze Age treasures, the handle of a Viking knife from the 10th century, medieval vessels and a gold signet ring of a bishop of Chełmno and Kamień from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. There are also glass negatives from the early 20th century with photographs of the former Cammin county, bottles from a pre-war brewery, photographs of post-war Kamień, fossils and collections of fauna. In the chapter house of the co-cathedral there is a permanent exhibition of sacred and archaeological monuments.
Since 2021 the museum has presented a multimedia exhibition, “The Kamień Capacitor”, devoted to the discovery of Ewald Georg von Kleist, dean of the Kamień cathedral chapter. It is shown in the historic dean's manor from the second half of the 17th century, known as Kleist's Manor, and on the ground floor of the museum's main seat.
