A branch of the National Museum in the former fortress commandant's building, with temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
The Museum of Contemporary Art is a branch of the National Museum in Szczecin at Staromłyńska 1, in the Neoclassical building of the former commandant's office of the Szczecin fortress garrison, built in the last quarter of the 18th century. Until the end of the Second World War the building served the military authorities, and in the 1970s it was handed over to the museum.
In 1980, after adaptation, the building became the seat of a branch devoted to contemporary art. The programme is based on cycles of temporary exhibitions, its own collection (Polish and foreign art) and projects with other institutions and artists. The museum also shows artists from the West Pomerania region and coordinates the international Mare Articum programme, within which it organises the Baltic Biennale of Contemporary Art.
