Palace in Przelewice

About Palace in Przelewice

Neoclassical palace from the early 19th century with a relief of Demeter, today the seat of a research centre.

The palace in Przelewice is a Neoclassical building with a columned portal and a relief of the goddess Demeter above the entrance. After years of abandonment and ruin it was renovated as the seat of a research and implementation centre. It stands next to the dendrological garden founded by one of its former residents.

The owners of the palace

The palace was built in the early 19th century for August Heinrich Borgstede of Berlin, owner of the Przelewice estate. Above the door an inscription with the date MDCCC has survived, but the exact date of construction has not been established, and the name of the architect is unknown.

From 1821 the property belonged to Prince August of Hohenzollern, who bought it for Auguste Arend. From 1876 it was held by Caspar Lachman, and from 1922 it was the home of Conrad von Borsig, the founder of the dendrological garden in Przelewice.

Facade and interiors

The building has two storeys, a hipped roof and a stone plinth. The facade faces south and is preceded by a courtyard with flower beds.

  • The entrance is flanked by two Ionic columns, and above it is a semicircular window.
  • Above the portal is a relief of Demeter with a sickle and ears of grain.
  • In the tympanum two reclining female figures with cornucopias can be seen.
  • Inside, on the axis of the entrance, there is a round hall with eight Ionic columns and a mezzanine, and on the garden side a ballroom with rounded corners.

Ruin and renovation

After 1945 the local state farm took over the palace and adapted it for flats, a community room and storerooms. In 1971 the building was abandoned and fell into ruin. In 1993 it was taken over by Przelewice municipality, and in 2004-2006, thanks to European funds, it was renovated as the seat of the Botanical Research and Implementation Centre.
