About Palace in Czerników

A palace from 1850 by Lake Czernikowskie, with a Rococo salon inside and a park of 5.6 ha.

The palace in Czerników stands in the north-western part of the village, on Lake Czernikowskie, in Myślibórz municipality. It was built in 1850 by Friedrich Wilhelm von Wedel, owner of the estate since the turn of 1839 and 1840. The building is entered in the heritage register, and behind it stretches a park with a lime avenue.

The palace

The palace has two storeys and a basement, is brick, with pilasters, and has a hipped roof surrounded by parapets. The heritage register gives its style as neo-Baroque, whereas the Wikipedia entry calls it Baroque. Inside there are several stylish rooms, among them a Rococo salon with stucco on the walls and ceiling and a room with a fireplace, a wooden ceiling and parquet floors. The annexe and the farm buildings are in a similar style.

History and condition

In 1896 the estate was bought by the von Oelsen family. After the Second World War, foremen's training courses were held in the palace, and in 1953-1979 a basic horticultural school operated there. The building was then taken over by an agricultural combine from Myślibórz. The Wikipedia entry, describing the situation in 2010, speaks of private owners and says that the building needs renovation. The renovation of the interiors in 1963 erased some of their historic features.

The park

A naturalistic park of 5.6 ha was laid out in the late 18th century. It has a dense old deciduous stand, mainly limes, beeches, maples and oaks. The most impressive specimens are a beech with a trunk girth of 410 cm and the oak Dobromir with a girth of 480 cm. A legend, which arose only in the communist period, says that Bolesław the Brave met Duke Dobromir here, who gave him his daughter as a wife. In the perspective of the lime avenue lies the family cemetery of the former owners.

Nearby

In the village stands the Church of St Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and in Rościno, about five kilometres away, the palace in Rościno.
