A Neo-Renaissance palace of 1898 on Lake Nowowarpieńskie in Karszno, the former residence of the Enckevort family, now under renovation.
Karszno Palace, in the Nowe Warpno district of Karszno, is a Neo-Renaissance residence of 1898 on the shore of Lake Nowowarpieńskie, on the edge of the Wkrzańska Forest. From its windows can be seen the lake, the Nowe Warpno peninsula and the island of Riether Werder.
The palace was built in 1898 in the French Neo-Renaissance style by Albrecht von Enckevort, the owner of the estate since 1884; the models were drawn from, among others, the châteaux of the Loire. Karszno remained in the hands of the Enckevort family from 1766 until the Second World War. It is a single-storey building with a cellar, of clinker brick, under a mansard roof with dormers. Its character is enhanced by a small central projection, two side projections on the garden side, a three-storey square tower and an extensive terrace on arcades. The Enckevort family coat of arms is placed on the front facade. The palace's movable furnishings have not survived.
In 1945 the estate was nationalised. In 1974-1983 the palace was converted into a guardhouse of the Border Protection Troops (Wojska Ochrony Pogranicza), and later it housed the Border Guard. From 2009 the user was the Pomeranian Library (Książnica Pomorska), which set up a storage library here. The municipality then put the building up for sale, and the new owner began a thorough renovation; according to the Wikipedia entry, hotel and banqueting activity will probably be carried out here.
