About Prisoner-of-War Cemetery in Sosnowice

Cemetery by the site of a former prisoner-of-war camp of 1941-1945, with plaques for prisoners of many nationalities.

The Prisoner-of-War Cemetery in Sosnowice near Golczewo lies near the site where a German prisoner-of-war camp operated during the Second World War. It has been recognised as a place of national remembrance.

The camp

Construction of the camp began in the summer of 1941, when the first Soviet prisoners were brought in. The prisoners, women and men of various nationalities, worked in an ammunition factory and an ammunition renovation plant, mainly loading and unloading railway wagons. An outbreak of typhus occurred during the construction. At least about 300 people died, but neither the exact number of victims nor the personal details of the prisoners have been established. In February 1945 the camp was mined and blown up.

The cemetery today

The first commemoration, a large concrete obelisk, was put up in 1987. In the following years the cemetery was laid out with ten plaques and three granite crosses: Catholic, Orthodox and Greek Catholic. The plaques in a semicircle are dedicated, among others, to the Dutch, Italians, French, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians. The site is fenced with a wooden fence, and there is a granite plaque with the name of the cemetery and a plan. In 2013 preliminary research was carried out to establish the identity of those buried.
