Rohleder House

Mieszka I 1, Stargard
About Rohleder House

A townhouse of medieval origin with a Renaissance main building, rebuilt in 1973, the seat of the Stargard Library.

Rohleder House at Mieszka I Street 1 in Stargard is a townhouse of medieval origin, today the seat of the Stargard Library (Książnica Stargardzka). It is also known as the Kletzin House or the Kletzan House. It has a stepped gable, characteristic of Hanseatic towns, and its structure was rebuilt after the destruction of 1945.

Origin of the name

The names of the house are linked to the surnames of former owners. The postal worker Rohleder was the owner at the end of the 19th century. From 1922 the property belonged to Rudolf Kletzin, then to the liqueur producer Wolter, and until 1945 the ground floor was occupied by the firm Auto-Marx.

Architecture

The oldest part of the building was made in the 15th century as a farm outbuilding of an older house that has not survived. In the following century a main building was added to it, of stone and brick, with Renaissance features. The heritage register dates the building to the mid-16th century and describes it as brick and Renaissance. In 1945 the west wall, the façade and the vault of the main building burned down. Reconstruction was completed in 1973.
