Wegner Villa in Szczecin

Aleja Wojska Polskiego 164, Szczecin
About Wegner Villa in Szczecin

A Neo-Classical villa from 1897 with a Doric portico in Pogodno, today the seat of a private secondary school.

Georg Wegner's villa stands at Wojska Polskiego Avenue 164 in Szczecin's Pogodno district. It was built in 1897 for the physician Dr Georg Wegner and is listed in the heritage register. Today it houses a school, so it is viewed from the outside.

Architecture

The designer was the Szczecin architect Theodor Bless, and the villa was among the first buildings on the Neu-Westend estate. It stands at the back of a double plot running across the whole width of the block, from Wojska Polskiego Avenue to Krasickiego Street. The body is regular and symmetrical, on a quadrangular plan. The front façade facing the avenue is marked by a three-bay projecting bay with a four-column portico in the Doric order, which carries a terrace. In the gable is a tympanum with a bas-relief: griffins holding a coat-of-arms shield. The heritage register describes the style as Neo-Classical.

The central part has a two-and-a-half-tract layout, and at the front there was a drawing room. The side wings are single-storey with an attic, and from the side two semicircular-vaulted entrances lead in, one to the corridor, the other to the staircase. The grounds are surrounded by a plastered brick wall with a decorative metal grille, and a garden extends at the front. The historic interior furnishings have not survived.

Successive owners and present use

In 1910 the villa was bought by the lawyer Conrad Berndt, from 1935 his son Carl August Berndt lived here with his wife, and from 1937 the owner was the jurist Walther Weiss. After the war, until 1993 it housed a municipal kindergarten, then the seat of the Northern Chamber of Commerce and the Pomerania Euroregion. Since 2014 a private general secondary school has operated here. Nearby lie the Rose Garden and Kasprowicz Park.
