About Drawno Castle

Ruin of the Wedel knightly castle from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries on Lake Rudno in Drawno.

Drawno Castle is the ruin of a knightly castle from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, located on Lake Rudno. Fragments of the ground-floor walls have survived. The site has been listed in the heritage register since 1958.

The Wedel castle and its fate

The castle was built by the Wedel family on a square plan, on the site of an old Slavic stronghold that belonged to Greater Poland. It was surrounded by a perimeter wall and a moat. In the first half of the 15th century it was held by the Teutonic Knights, and in 1433-1436 it was in the hands of Polish troops.

Around 1600 the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style as a residence. It was destroyed by the Swedish wars of the 17th century and by Russian troops in 1758, during the Seven Years' War.
