Jewish Cemetery in Drawno

Drawno
About Jewish Cemetery in Drawno

A monument made of fragments of matzevot commemorates the Jewish cemetery in Drawno, devastated in 1938.

The Jewish cemetery in Drawno was established in the 19th century on what is now Łąkowa Street. The former necropolis no longer exists, and its fate is recalled by a monument made of recovered fragments of matzevot (Jewish gravestones).

History of the cemetery

On the night of 9 to 10 November 1938, Kristallnacht, the cemetery was devastated. Fragments of the gravestones were later used to harden roads, so some of the matzevot survived in road surfaces rather than at the former cemetery.

The “Macewa z bruku” monument

In 2008 a monument called “Macewa z bruku” (“A Matzevah from the Cobbles”) was made from recovered pieces of matzevot. The name points to the origin of the material: the stones were taken out of the paving. The commemoration concerns a cemetery that was located near the castle in Drawno.
