New Town Hall in Białogard

Plac Wolności 16-17, Białogard
About New Town Hall in Białogard

A brick town hall from the 1920s in a corner of the market square in Białogard, built in German Renaissance forms; listed in the heritage register.

The New Town Hall stands in the north-eastern corner of the market square in Białogard, at plac Wolności 16-17. The brick building from the 1920s was built as the seat of the municipal authorities and the municipal savings bank. It was entered in the heritage register in 1991.

Construction and style

The medieval town hall standing in the middle of the market square was demolished in 1847, and the administration moved to two townhouses on the western frontage. The decision on a new building was taken in the 1920s. According to the heritage record card, work began in 1923, and the building was handed over in May 1924, although the director of the local grammar school, H. Claus, gave the year 1926. The building refers to the Renaissance and northern European Mannerism, the so-called German Renaissance. Originally it had dark red elevations imitating brick and light detail imitating stone. The columned entrance porch was added somewhat later.

Disputes over the town hall

From the start the building aroused controversy. The architect Hans Reichow and the politician Karl Passarge considered that it disrupted the layout of the market square and obscured the medieval church. Today the town hall adjoins the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a few dozen metres away stands the Old Town Hall.
