About Palace in Kozia Góra

The ruin of the palace of the von Podewils family in Kozia Góra near Karlino, with a Neo-Gothic east façade decorated with sculptures of knights.

Kozia Góra Palace is the ruin of the former seat of the von Podewils family, who held the estate here from the 14th century until 1945. It stands in a hamlet in Karlino municipality (Białogard County), on national road no. 6 between Karlino and Malonowo. It is entered in the heritage register as part of a palace and farm complex.

History of the palace

According to the Encyclopedia of West Pomerania, the palace was built around 1770 by Adam Krzysztof von Podewils, and in the second half of the 19th century it was extended in Neo-Gothic forms by Hermann Heinrich Wilhelm von Podewils. The Wikipedia entry on the hamlet dates the building to the 17th century and lists rebuilding in 1818, 1850 and in the 20th century. The last owner was Countess Jadwiga Ponińska, née Podewils. After the war the estate was taken over by a state farm, and in the 1990s the palace passed into private hands and, unused, fell into ruin.

What can be seen from outside

The palace is built of masonry and has three storeys. The most striking part is the east façade: monumental, with a pair of side projecting bays, a gallery on small columns on the second floor, crowned with crenellation and pinnacles. Sculptures of knights stand on the projecting bays, and the coat of arms of the von Podewils family appears in the attic. The complex also has a manor park from the 18th century (about 4 ha, with exotic trees) with the ruins of a mausoleum from the early 19th century, and a half-timbered granary from the 16th century.
