Old Town Hall in Białogard

Plac Wolności 5, Białogard
About Old Town Hall in Białogard

A Neoclassical former town hall from 1827 with a wooden clock tower, now a museum and a wedding palace in Białogard.

The Old Town Hall is a Neoclassical merchant townhouse built in 1827, with a wooden clock tower added in 1847. It stands on Wolności Square in Białogard. Today it houses a museum and the Wedding Palace.

The building

The building is of plastered brick, with a gabled roof covered with plain tiles. From Staromiejska Street a pediment can be seen, and on the axis of the entrance there is a half-timbered insert closed by a tympanum. The ground floor on the entrance axis projects forward, and the crowning cornice with modillions is strongly projecting and richly moulded. The entrance door is original and decorated. The portal leading to the brick-and-stone cellars looks Baroque, but the Wikipedia entry gives it as pseudo-Baroque.

The clock tower has a post construction and is clad in boards. Its upper storey is open on four sides, and the storeys are divided by cornices.

The history of its functions

Until 1924 the building was the seat of the town authorities, the year in which the New Town Hall was completed. In 1926-1952 it housed a museum, and until 1998 municipal flats. After a thorough renovation, since 2004 the building has once again been the seat of the museum and the Wedding Palace.

Next to it is the New Town Hall, and a few hundred metres away the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
