Castles in Kołobrzeg are in practice fortifications: two medieval towers, a redoubt and the fortress system, all to see on your own.

There is no castle in the classic sense in this selection. The castle tag covers defensive sites: towers from the town walls and traces of the early modern fortress. The whole town is covered in things to do in Kołobrzeg, and the castles and strongholds of the region in castles in West Pomerania.

Which medieval towers survive in Kołobrzeg?

Two 14th-century towers have lasted: the Fuse Tower and the Prison Tower. The first is whole, the second a secured ruin.

The Baszta Lontowa at Stanisława Dubois 20 stands on Dubois Street and is the sole tower of the 14th-century walls that survived intact. People call it the Powder Tower, though Wikipedia treats this as a translation slip. The Prison Tower formed part of the northern stretch of the defences. In the Middle Ages it held people before trial or execution.

What is left of the Kołobrzeg fortress?

The early modern fortress left forts, redoubts and the Stone Bastion. Work began in 1653, and it was disarmed in 1872 (land) and 1887 (sea).

The Kołobrzeg Fortress entry here means the whole group of defences: Fort Ujście, the Morast and Solna redoubts and the bastion. The Marsh Redoubt is Morast by another name, a pentagonal fort of the late 18th century raised at the mouth of the Parsęta. Yachts of the harbour surround it now. The fortifications on the ground are described in Kołobrzeg Fortress on the ground: bastion, towers, redoubt and Wolf Fort.
