Things to do in Trzebiatów: the Kaszana Tower, St Mary church with a 90 m tower, three Gothic chapels and a palace on the Rega.

Trzebiatów is a small town on the Rega river with a preserved medieval street grid, defensive walls and Gothic chapels. Most sites are historic and close together, so the town is best explored on foot.

What to see in Trzebiatów first?

Begin with the old town, the parish church and the tower by the river. They show the town founded in 1277, a Gothic parish church and what is left of the walls.

The historic layout of Trzebiatów is a chessboard of streets around the market square, entered in the register of monuments in 1955, with parts of 13th and 14th-century walls. On the square stands the town hall from 1701, whose facade keeps Gothic arcades from the first council house. It still houses the town office. The Church of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Jana Pawła II 2 is a Gothic hall church with a 90 metre tower, a bell from 1399 and neo-Gothic furnishings. Today it is a Marian shrine.

On the Rega side stands the Kaszana Tower, a round brick tower from the 14th century, 21 metres tall, with a cellar prison below. It can sometimes be visited in the summer season. A local tale about a bowl of porridge is collected in an article on legends of the wall defenders.

Which chapels and churches in Trzebiatów are worth seeing?

Trzebiatów kept three Gothic hospital chapels, and two of them now serve Eastern congregations. It is a rare cluster of small places of worship that forms a short walk around the edge of the old town.

St Gertrude Chapel, from the 14th century, has been a Greek Catholic church since 1957. Holy Spirit Chapel at Wojska Polskiego 44 has been Orthodox since 1956, and in 1534 it hosted a diet of the Pomeranian estates. The third, St George Chapel at Kołobrzeska 6, was a leper hospital and since a 19th-century rebuilding has been a dwelling, so it is seen from outside. The neo-Gothic St John Church from 1904 was built by Old Lutherans. It has a 35 metre tower and is a branch of the Evangelical-Augsburg parish in Szczecin.

What to see in the palace and on Wyszkowo hill?

The palace at Wojska Polskiego 67 and Wyszkowo hill show older layers of the town: a stronghold, a Premonstratensian convent and the castle of the Griffins. The first offers a museum for rainy days, the second is an open-air ruin.

The Trzebiatów Palace stands where a ducal stronghold, a convent and a Renaissance castle once were. Since 1989 it has housed a cultural centre, a library and the Feininger gallery. The Palace Museum tells the story of the building and the Württemberg era in the Hall and the Ducal Room. On the hill above the Rega stand the ruins of the church at Wyszkowo, a pilgrimage Jerusalem Chapel on the site of a former convent. Ruins across the region are covered in an article on ruined churches.

What else is worth seeing in Trzebiatów?

For technology lovers there is the railway water tower from 1906 at the end of ul. Torowa. It has a rare spherical Klönne tank and was taken out of service in 1990. The list also includes the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Trzebiatów in Stargard commune. It is a different village with the same name, with a 15th-century fieldstone church. Walls and gates of neighbouring towns are described in an article on the walls of Gryfice, Trzebiatów and Goleniów.
