Architecture in Trzebiatów means a Gothic hall church with a 90 m tower, the Kaszana Tower, a market-square town hall, a palace and hospital chapels.

Trzebiatów kept its medieval layout on the Rega, so most of this list is Old Town monuments that can be covered on foot in a few hours. You find churches, fortifications, a seat of authority and one early twentieth-century technical monument. Other places in the town are on things to do in Trzebiatów, and the general regional list is architecture in West Pomerania.

What does the historic layout of Trzebiatów look like?

The town was chartered in 1277 and its streets have been regular since, in a grid with the market square at the centre. The Układ urbanistyczny Trzebiatowa (urban layout) has been in the register of monuments since 1955 and also includes defensive walls from the 13th and 14th centuries. A good way to grasp the town is to walk around the square and then follow the wall to the river.

Which buildings stand around the square and in the centre?

Three buildings define the axis of the town: a town hall, a church and a palace. All lie close together.

The Ratusz w Trzebiatowie (Town Hall) occupies the centre of the market, number 1. The present building dates from 1701, and Gothic arcades from the first town hall survive in its facade. The town authorities still sit here. At Jana Pawła II 2 rises the Kościół Macierzyństwa Najświętszej Marii Panny w Trzebiatowie (St Mary's), a Gothic hall from the 14th-15th centuries, with a tower 90 metres high and a bell from 1399. It is also a Marian shrine. The Pałac w Trzebiatowie (Palace) at Wojska Polskiego 67 is a Neoclassical building that arose on the site of a ducal stronghold, a Premonstratensian nunnery and a Renaissance Griffin castle. It now serves as a cultural centre with a library and the Feininger gallery.

Where can you see fortifications and chapels in Trzebiatów?

The Baszta Kaszana (Kaszana Tower) is a round brick tower dating from the 1300s, 21 metres tall, closing a corner of the walls above the Rega. A dungeon lies at its base, and visitors can enter in summer, so check the rules with the operator before a visit.

Three Gothic hospital chapels are a curiosity of their own. The Kaplica Świętego Ducha w Trzebiatowie (Holy Spirit Chapel) on Wojska Polskiego street (number 44) was the venue of the 1534 assembly of Pomeranian estates; since 1956 it has served the Orthodox faithful. The Kaplica św. Jerzego w Trzebiatowie (St George's Chapel) (number 6, Kołobrzeska street) was founded for a leper hospital; after rebuilding in the 1800s it is a dwelling, so you see it only from outside.

Is there a technical monument in Trzebiatów?

The Wieża ciśnień w Trzebiatowie (Water Tower) stands at the end of Torowa street, by the station. It was built in 1906 and taken out of use in 1990. Its distinctive feature is a rare spherical Klönne-type tank. It fits well on the way to the station or before a train departs.

A note on names: the Kościół Narodzenia NMP w Trzebiatowie (gmina Stargard) (Church of the Nativity) is in a different place of the same name, in the Stargard municipality. It is a fieldstone church from the 15th century, restored in 1990-1998, a branch of the parish in Pęzino; do not search for it in the town by the river.
