Things to do in Kołowo: Bukowa Forest with Emerald Lake, two walking trails to Bukowiec, a neo-Gothic church and an old monument in the woods.

Kołowo lies in a clearing among the woods of Bukowa Forest, right next to Szczecin. It is a place for people who prefer a forest walk to sightseeing: most targets are free and call for sturdy shoes.

Where to walk in Bukowa Forest from Kołowo?

For a walk take one of the two trails that start together at the bus loop on the Bukowe estate, on Kolorowych Domów Street. Both lead through the Bukowe Hills and are free.

The Mountain Trail to Bukowiec is a black walking trail, 3.8 kilometres long, in the Szczecin Landscape Park. It leads to Bukowiec, the highest elevation of the Bukowe Hills (148.3 metres above sea level). On the way you pass the school hostel after 0.3 kilometres and the Głaz Grońskiego boulder, a protected monument, after one kilometre.

The Trail through Słupi Głaz named after Wojciech Lipniacki is a red trail, 6 kilometres long. It passes the nature monument of the Wojciech Lipniacki Beech, the Chojna hillfort, the Swedish Mill, the Zielawa causeway and the Siodło Zielawy saddle, and leads to the Słupi Głaz boulder. In 1997 the name was extended with that of the local-history enthusiast Wojciech Lipniacki. More ideas for outings on your own are on the page Kołowo solo.

What to see in the Szczecin Landscape Park Bukowa Forest?

The Szczecin Landscape Park "Puszcza Bukowa" is the landscape park nearest to Szczecin, with a large forest complex on the Bukowe Hills and the Kołowo, Binowo and Dobropole clearings. It covers more than nine thousand hectares and has existed since 1981.

The most visited place in the park is Emerald Lake, formed when a chalk quarry flooded. Entry to the park is free, and within its borders are trails and nature reserves. A fuller list of free routes is on the page free attractions in Kołowo.

What else is worth seeing in and around Kołowo?

In the village itself, see the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Szkolna 15. It is a neo-Gothic church from the end of the 19th century, set on a slope in the centre of the village. It has a square tower, stone in the lower part and brick above, with friezes and pinnacles. Grave slabs can be seen in the chancel floor. The church is now a branch of the parish in Szczecin-Podjuchy.

In the forest, on the top of Piekielnik hill, stands the Carl Ludwig Gené Monument. It is a granite stele from 1894, set up by the Bukowa Forest Lovers' Society. It commemorates the head forester Gené, who lived from 1820 to 1893. The inscription on the front is in German.
