Free things to do in Kołowo are Bukowa Forest, two walking trails and a monument in the woods: four places that need no ticket.
All four sit within the Szczecin Landscape Park, right by Szczecin, so a day in the forest is easy to put together. Other places in the area are under things to do in Kołowo, and free places across the region under free attractions in West Pomerania.
What can you see in Bukowa Forest for free?
The simplest plan is the landscape park plus the monument on Piekielnik hill. The park covers over nine thousand hectares of forest on the Bukowe Hills.
The Szczecin Landscape Park Puszcza Bukowa was established in 1981. It also takes in the Kołowska, Binowska and Dobropolska clearings, and it holds trails, reserves and Emerald Lake. On the summit of Piekielnik hill stands the Carl Ludwig Gené monument, a granite stele of 1894 commemorating the forester from Śmierdnica. The Society of Friends of Bukowa Forest paid for it.
Which trail should you walk in Bukowa Forest?
Two marked trails are on offer: the black one to Bukowiec and the red one past Słupi Głaz. Both start on the Bukowo estate and both carry the views tag.
The Mountain Trail to Bukowiec is 3.8 km long and climbs to Bukowiec, 148.3 m above sea level, the highest point of the Bukowe Hills. The Słupi Głaz trail named after Wojciech Lipniacki is longer, 6.0 km, and passes the Chojna hillfort. It starts at the bus terminus on Kolorowych Domów Street, together with the black trail.
