Things to do in Golczewo: the castle tower of the Kamień bishops, two lakes with a beach and a viewpoint, and a peat-bog reserve.
Golczewo lies between lakes, so most sights are about water, walking and nature, with one tower from the 14th century and a field-stone church. A good place for a trip where views matter.
What to see in Golczewo itself?
In town, see the castle tower and the church, then walk down to the lakes. The tower stands in the western part of Golczewo, on the isthmus between Lake Szczucze and Lake Okonie, so you know straight away which way to go next.
The Castle Tower in Golczewo is all that remains of the Kamień bishops' castle, built in the 14th century. It is 31 or 33 metres tall. The lower part is a square plinth of erratic boulders, higher up the tower turns into a cylindrical brick section with crenellations, and at the top stands a hexagonal brick helm about ten metres high. After renovation in 2004 it was opened to visitors in the summer season.
The Church of St Andrew Bobola was built in the 15th century of field stone. At first it had a single nave and a Gothic portal in the west front, and in 1805 it was extended to the south. The brick tower is 30 metres tall and dates from 1882, and inside is a Mannerist-Baroque pulpit. It is a parish church in the Golczewo deanery.
Where to go by the water in Golczewo, and for free?
For the water go to Lake Szczucze, and for birdwatching to Lake Okonie. Both places are free and good for a walk.
Szczucze covers 33.68 ha and is developed as a town beach. In its north-eastern part are a bathing area with the Promenade of the 10th Anniversary, a walking pier and two footpaths. The guarded beach has a water slide and a rental point for floating equipment.
Okonie covers 51.31 ha and is very shallow, with an average depth of about a metre. Most of the shore is inaccessible, so the lake is viewed from designated places, for example from the ornithological viewpoint. A section of the Niemica Valley Trail passes here.
