the history of a Gothic church in Pomorzany
Churches in Pomorzany, Szczecin: a former water tower, a neo-Gothic clinker church and a Gothic church on an escarpment. Three different eras.
The three churches of this district are separated by decades, and each tells a different story about it: waterworks, Lutherans and a medieval village. All suit unhurried viewing on your own.
The Our Lady of Jasna Góra church, described on its own card, stands on Hetmański Hill at Orawska 3. The Neo-Romanesque structure went up in the 1860s for the city waterworks. Only specialists spot the former purpose from its sixteen-sided plan, since from outside it looks like a centralised church. It has been a parish since 1985.
At Połabska 2 stands a small neo-Gothic church of St Joseph, laid in dark clinker brick in 1890-1893. A Lutheran congregation built it, and since 2021 it has been a shrine of St Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family.
The oldest traces belong to the church of St Maximilian Maria Kolbe on the escarpment at Włościańska 67. A church in Pomorzany was first recorded in 1445. The building survived further destruction and rebuilding without losing its Gothic mass.
The set closes with the category of churches and monasteries from the whole region, and the Pomorzany page introduces the district. For historical background, read the article on the old brewery.
