Parks and nature in Zdroje, Szczecin: Zdroje Forest Park, a yew reserve and the Prince's Oak in Puszcza Bukowa. No fees, all under open sky.

Zdroje is Szczecin's entrance to Puszcza Bukowa (the Beech Forest). Three places sit close together in a single wood on the right bank of the Odra, so they combine easily into one trip.

Where in Zdroje can you take a long forest walk?

In Zdroje Forest Park, the north-western corner of Puszcza Bukowa. It covers 173 ha of the city's municipal woodland. Beech dominates, mixed with oak and pine, and the ground undulates as it lies on the northern Bukowe Hills. Trails and viewpoints lead through, and a path reaches Lake Szmaragdowe, whose story is told in the article on a chalk mine filled with water.

What does Zdroje especially protect?

Inside the park lies the floristic Zdroje nature reserve, a little over 2 ha. Its task is to protect common yew, which regenerates here despite sitting at the edge of its range.

A separate draw is a natural monument, the Prince's Oak. Two brothers, Frederick William IV and William I, planted it on 31 May 1821. The trunk measures 365 cm round, and the tree stands west of Lake Szmaragdowe.

All three places cost nothing. More greenery is on the page for the Zdroje district and in the regional parks and nature category.
