Things to do alone in Barlinek: a lakeside beach, a museum with an exhibition on the chess master Lasker and three churches to explore at your own pace.
Barlinek suits you well if you are travelling without company or simply prefer to sightsee your own way. The five places here need no arrangements with anyone and no group to keep up with. The full overview of the town is on the page with things to do in Barlinek, and a wider selection for people travelling on their own is gathered under solo travel in West Pomerania.
What to see in Barlinek when you are on your own
A solo visit to Barlinek is built around a lake, a museum and churches. By the water you can take a quiet walk, in the museum you learn the history of the town and of a world chess champion, and in three churches you see three building traditions: Gothic, Neo-Gothic and brick architecture from the early twentieth century.
By the water
Jezioro Barlineckie (Lake Barlinek) lies within the town limits, among wooded hills cut by ravines. On the built-up side there is a large beach, a bathing area and a water sports centre, while the lake itself has four islands and a green trail running all the way round. For someone on their own it is the simplest way to spend a few hours outdoors, with nothing to arrange.
In the museum
Muzeum Regionalne w Barlinku (Regional Museum in Barlinek) occupies Gutenberg House, an old print shop built in the 1800s. Its best-known display is the exhibition about Emanuel Lasker, the world chess champion born in Barlinek. Further rooms deal with archaeology, local history and rural life nearby. You can read every label for as long as you like.
Three churches
Cerkiew Zaśnięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Barlinku (Orthodox Church of the Dormition) stands at Górna 7. The red-brick Neo-Gothic walls date to 1873, when it was built for a Protestant congregation; since 1947 it has served Orthodox worshippers and holds a nineteenth-century iconostasis. Kościół Niepokalanego Serca Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Barlinku (the Immaculate Heart church) at Paderewskiego 3 is a Gothic building begun in the 1200s, restored after a blaze in 1852 and covered by a star-shaped vault. The youngest is Kościół św. Bonifacego w Barlinku (St Boniface's Church) standing on Świętego Bonifacego street (no. 13): a brick building put up in 1923, which keeps an altar triptych from the same decade.
What to do in Barlinek when it rains
On a wet day the museum is the best choice from this list, as it is the only place marked as good for bad weather. The displays on Lasker, archaeology and local history can fill a good part of the day, and a drier hour can go on the churches and a walk by the lake.
If you would like to see how these places fit into one story of the town, read the article Barlinek: the town of Emanuel Lasker, the lake and the Barlinek Landscape Park.
