Things to do alone in Białogard: see a market square with two town halls, brick churches from the fourteenth century and castle cellars by the Parsęta.

Białogard is a town to look at in your own rhythm: no queue for tickets, no group, and a pause at every facade. All five places here carry the tag for solo travellers. For the town as a whole, see things to do in Białogard; for other solo-friendly places in the region, try solo travel in West Pomerania.

Where to start a solo visit to Białogard

Start on Plac Wolności, because that is where the buildings that say most about the town stand together. Two town halls built more than a century apart face the square, and the churches begin a short walk away. The castle hill comes last, for anyone who likes ruins and quiet.

Two town halls on one square

At number 5 stands Stary Ratusz w Białogardzie, a Neoclassical trading house of 1827. A timber clock tower was set against it in 1847, and inside there is now a museum and a ceremonial hall for weddings. At numbers 16-17 you will see Nowy ratusz w Białogardzie, a brick building of the 1920s imitating German Renaissance and entered in the register of monuments. Comparing the two is a short lesson in how quickly fashion moved in public architecture.

Two Gothic churches

Kościół Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Białogardzie (Kościelna 1a) rose while the town walls were being built. It has three aisles, a Baroque altar and an organ dated to 1775, and fires damaged it in 1506, 1517 and 1677. The other, Kościół św. Jerzego w Białogardzie (Świdwińska 3a), lay in a cemetery for a long time and was a Protestant chapel until 1945. Today it is an auxiliary church, and its Gothic brickwork is the building's trademark.

The hill above the Parsęta

Relikty zamku w Białogardzie is a small but telling place. In the western part of the old stronghold a masonry castle went up in 1315, and only its niched cellar walls survived. There is nothing to tour here in the sense of an exhibition, only a view of what the castle left behind.

How to plan one day in Białogard on your own

Give the morning to Plac Wolności and the church on Kościelna, then in the afternoon walk to the church on Świdwińska and up to the castle hill. If the weather turns, the Old Town Hall remains, since it houses the museum.

Frequently asked questions

Is Białogard a good place to travel alone?

Yes, because the sights rely on looking at buildings and walking. You do not have to book a group visit or match anyone else's pace.

Which of the Białogard town halls is older?

The Old Town Hall of 1827 is older. The New Town Hall dates only from the 1920s.

Does anything remain of Białogard's castle?

Yes: the niched cellar walls on the castle hill by the river. The castle itself was pulled down, so the building is gone.

Is there a museum in Białogard?

It is inside the Old Town Hall, at Plac Wolności 5, which also contains the wedding hall.
