Wolin Gate in Goleniów
Goleniów, Plac Bramy Wolińskiej 1

the only surviving town gate of Goleniów, from the 14th-15th century, today a cultural centre and tourist information

Monuments in Goleniów are the Gothic Wolin Gate, two brick towers by the Ina, a half-timbered granary of the 18th century and a post office from the 1890s.

Five objects in the small centre of the town, showing two eras: medieval fortifications, and the river port with Prussian-era building. All lie in the centre, so sightseeing needs no transfers.

Which monument in Goleniów to start with?

Start with Brama Wolińska w Goleniowie (Wolin Gate) at Plac Bramy Wolińskiej 1. It is a Gothic town gate built in the 1300s and 1400s, 26 metres high. Of the four gates that guarded the town, only this one survived to the present day.

Inside are the Goleniów House of Culture and the tourist information centre, so it is a natural starting point: you can ask about routes here and see one of the most valuable monuments of the town. The history of the gate and of the town's coin minting is told in the article Goleniów: Wolin Gate, towers and the quarter-groschen minted in the town from 1386.

Which towers from the defensive walls of Goleniów can you see?

Two, both of brick and both by the river Ina. They differ in shape: one is octagonal, the other cylindrical.

Baszta Mennicza w Goleniowie (Mint Tower) is an octagonal tower in a stretch of fortifications running along the promenade by the Ina. The name recalls the town mint, which struck the Goleniów white groschen. The register of monuments does not give an exact date for the building.

Baszta Prochowa w Goleniowie (Gunpowder Tower), known also as the Guard Tower or the Prison Tower, is cylindrical, made of red brick and topped with a conical roof. The register of monuments dates it to the 14th century. It once served as a powder magazine and a prison. Walls and gates of other towns are compared in the text on the town walls and gates of the region.

What in Goleniów recalls the port on the Ina?

Spichlerz w Goleniowie (the granary) at Nadrzeczna 8 is the only survivor of several grain stores that once stood in the port on the Ina. It has a half-timbered structure, dates from the 18th century and is entered in the register of monuments.

A port already operated by the river in the 14th century. Today this one building is what recalls its grain stores. The trading traditions of the region are explained in the article the Hanseatic League in West Pomerania.

Is there a monument from Prussian times in Goleniów?

Yes. Budynek Poczty w Goleniowie (the post office building) at Konstytucji 3 Maja 17 is a red brick building from 1896-1898, raised by the Prussian administration. Before the First World War it housed the Imperial Post.

The building is a registered monument and still has its original function: a post office.

What else to see in Goleniów?

The town's religious monuments are gathered on the list Churches and monasteries: Goleniów. Everything else in town sits under Goleniów, while wider monument lists are collected in Monuments.
