Wolin Gate in Goleniów
Goleniów, Plac Bramy Wolińskiej 1

the only surviving town gate of Goleniów, from the 14th-15th century, today a cultural centre and tourist information

Solo in Goleniów means a walk along the walls by the Ina: the Wolin Gate, two towers, a granary, a Gothic parish church and the town's oldest ruins.

Goleniów is intimate and suits a few hours without a plan: the main monuments lie near the river and the market square, and much can be seen on foot. The list holds medieval fortifications, churches and one small museum. An overview of the whole town is in things to do in Goleniów, and other places for a trip without company are in the regional solo selection.

What can you see in Goleniów on your own in a few hours?

Start with the Wolin Gate at Plac Bramy Wolińskiej 1. This Gothic gate, over twenty metres tall, was one of four and the only one to last, and it now houses a culture centre with tourist information. The rest of the route is set by the towers in the walls along the Ina. The whole route is helped by the article on the Wolin Gate, towers and the coin struck in town.

The surviving walls of Goleniów are compared in the text on walls and gates of the region's towns, and the town's part in old trade is described in the article on the Hanseatic League in West Pomerania.

Where can you see the towers and the granary in Goleniów?

Baszta Mennicza w Goleniowie (Mint Tower) is an eight-sided brick tower, part of the fortifications along the river Ina, where the Goleniów white groschen was once minted. In the same walls stands Baszta Prochowa w Goleniowie (Gunpowder Tower), round, of red brick, known too as the Guard or Prison Tower, once a gunpowder store.

By the river stands also Spichlerz w Goleniowie (Granary) at Nadrzeczna 8, a half-timbered building of the eighteenth century, the only one to survive from the warehouses of the old port. Together with the towers it forms a short stretch of a walk by the river.

Which churches in Goleniów are worth seeing?

Goleniów has four religious sites with the solo tag, from medieval ruins to modern parishes. The Gothic parish church is the most interesting, but the ruins by the Ina also deserve attention.

Kościół św. Katarzyny w Goleniowie (Church of St Catherine) on Mieszka I square is a Gothic church of the fifteenth century with three aisles, once the main parish church and regarded as Goleniów's grandest monument. It was rebuilt after wartime damage, and inside are relics of St Faustina. The oldest traces are at the ruins of St George's Chapel on Sportowa street: the foundations were dug up in 2004 and the site became a small park with paths.

The other two churches are newer parish churches. Kościół św. Jerzego w Goleniowie (Church of St George) stands on Andersa street and has stained glass and bas-reliefs, and Kościół Matki Bożej Nieustającej Pomocy w Goleniowie (Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help) is in the Helenów housing estate.

What can you do in Goleniów when it rains?

Ośrodek Dokumentacji Dziejów Ziemi Goleniowskiej w Goleniowie (Documentation Centre for the History of the Goleniów Land) works in a townhouse called the Yellow House at Pocztowa 2 and tells the story of the town and the region. It is the only entry with the rain tag, so it is a natural stop before going back outside. At Konstytucji 3 Maja 17 you will also find Budynek Poczty w Goleniowie (Post Office Building) of 1896-1898, which still houses a post office.
