a coastal lake with sailing marinas and tourist boats in season

Things to do alone in Mielno: a walk by Lake Jamno, fishing boats on the beach at Unieście, a seaplane sightseeing flight and a Gothic church.

The Mielno area copes well with solo sightseeing, because most places are about looking: at the water, the boats and the coastal panorama. All five entries carry the solo tag. One of them concerns a different village of the same name, so it is worth checking before you set out. The whole municipality is covered on things to do in Mielno, and other suggestions for travelling alone are listed under solo travel in West Pomerania.

What to do in Mielno when you are on your own

The easiest start is the water, because it gives this place its character. On one side lies the Baltic, on the other Lake Jamno, and between them a narrow spit. You can take a boat trip, watch fishing boats, or even rise into the air in a seaplane.

Lake Jamno and scenic flights

Jamno lies on the coast within the Mielno municipality and is separated from the sea by a sandbar. It has sailing marinas and tourist boat cruises, and its shores suit a quiet walk. Off its surface rises the aircraft of WodnoSamolotem.pl: scenic flights along the Polish coast in a Cessna 206 fitted with floats instead of wheels. Six people board, and take-off and landing both happen on the water. A certified carrier organises them.

More about the history of the lake, the Jamieński Nurt channel and plans for a port is in the article Lake Jamno, the storm gates and the port that was never built.

Unieście: boats on the beach

Przystań Rybacka w Unieściu (the fishing harbour) sits by the beach on the spit that separates the sea from Jamno. The cutters are hauled straight onto the sand, so you see the fishermen at work from close by, and fish goes on sale right after the catch. The beach is wide, sandy and clean. It is a good spot for a solo walk in the morning, when the boats put out to sea.

A Gothic church in Mielno

Kościół Przemienienia Pańskiego w Mielnie (the church of the Transfiguration) stands at Kościelna 29, about 750 metres from the Baltic as the crow flies. It is a fifteenth-century Gothic building of brick and fieldstone. The sixteenth-century tower was defensive in character, and inside you will find a pulpit from the Baroque period and windows in a Neo-Gothic spirit. It stands on a low rise, and traces of old moats survive around it.

Is there another Mielno nearby?

Yes, and it is worth remembering when you plan a trip. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, listed as the church in Mielno near Węgorzyno, is not in the seaside Mielno but in a village in Łobez county. It is a half-timbered church from the turn of the eighteenth century, founded by the Wedel family, with a free-standing wooden tower. It belongs to the parish in Sielsko and is in the register of monuments. If you are heading for the sea, this church lies on the other side of the voivodeship.
