Architecture in Myślibórz means a Gothic collegiate church, a classicist town hall, a neo-Gothic sanctuary, two medieval chapels and a museum in a chapel.
Myślibórz is small and its monuments stand close together, so the six places in this set can be covered in one afternoon. Here you find Gothic in brick and granite, Baroque in an altar and classicism on the market square. More of the town is covered under attractions in Myślibórz, and buildings from across the region under architecture in West Pomerania.
Which buildings in the centre of Myślibórz should you see first?
Start on the market square, home to both the town hall and the collegiate church. Only a few steps separate them, and together they show two different eras: Gothic and classicist.
Ratusz w Myśliborzu (Town Hall) stands at Rynek im. Jana Pawła II 1. The brick building of 1771-1772 has two storeys, and its centre is taken by a rusticated projection with a triangular pediment. Baroque ornaments can be seen above the windows. The mayor still works in the building, so you view it from outside, from the square.
Next to it rises Kolegiata św. Jana Chrzciciela w Myśliborzu (St John the Baptist), at Kolegiacka Street 3. It was built in the early fifteenth century, but granite blocks from the late 1200s survive in the walls. Inside are a Baroque altar from 1697 and Buchholz organs from the middle of the nineteenth century. The story of the town as capital of the New March is summed up in Myślibórz as capital of the New March in 1298-1537 and what remains of it.
Where in Myślibórz can you see small chapels and neo-Gothic?
Along Bohaterów Warszawy and Lipowa streets lie two Gothic chapels and a neo-Gothic sanctuary. This is the quieter part of the set, because the buildings are small and not on the square itself.
Kaplica Jerozolimska w Myśliborzu (Jerusalem Chapel) is a tiny brick chapel consecrated in 1514. According to the entry on the town it marked the end of a Way of the Cross that ran from beneath the walls. A legend ties its distance from the Holy Spirit chapel to a stretch of Jesus's Way of the Cross in Jerusalem. Kaplica szpitalna św. Gertrudy, ob. pracownia plastyczna (St Gertrude's Hospital Chapel) at Lipowa Street 4B dates from the second half of the fifteenth century. It stands on a stone plinth and buttresses support the walls. Today an art studio works inside, so do not count on seeing the interior.
Sanktuarium Miłosierdzia Bożego w Myśliborzu (Divine Mercy Sanctuary), number 78 on the same street, was raised in brick in 1905-1907. It has a stepped eastern gable, and inside a net vault and an original wooden altar. Since 1993 the sanctuary has held relics of St Faustina Kowalska.
Is there a museum in a historic building in Myślibórz?
Yes, Muzeum Pojezierza Myśliborskiego (Myślibórz Lakeland Museum) has occupied the Gothic Holy Spirit chapel at Bohaterów Warszawy 74 since 1979. It is the only place in the set with a rainy-day tag, because its exhibitions fill four rooms under a roof.
The chapel measures 22.4 by 9.7 metres, and the building is an exhibit in itself. The rooms follow the town from its medieval beginnings through the decades after 1945, and also show contemporary art. The destruction the town has lived through is covered in Fires that changed towns: Nowe Warpno 1692, Chociwel 1492, Dobrzany 1606 and Myślibórz 1539.
