Cemeteries and monuments in the Old Town of Szczecin: Hercules and the Centaur, Frederick II, Mickiewicz, Bogislaw X with Anna Jagiellon, and Flora.

The Old Town holds several free sculptures and monuments from different eras: Baroque, Prussian and post-war. All five lie close together, so they suit a short walk from the Chrobry Embankment and the castle to Plac Orła Białego.

Which monuments by the National Museum are worth seeing?

Hercules Fighting the Centaur is a sandstone sculpture on the terrace before the principal building of the Szczecin National Museum, on the Wały Chrobrego. Ludwig Manzel made it in 1916, and it was funded by the Szczecin consul Kisker. The courtyard off Staromłyńska street, belonging to the museum, holds the Monument to Frederick II the Great, a marble figure unveiled in 1793 and based on Schadow's idea. Since 2015 it has been displayed here rather than where it first stood.

You pass both sculptures on the way to the museums of the Old Town, so they combine easily with a visit indoors.

Which monument stands by the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes?

The Monument to Duke Bogislaw X and Princess Anna Jagiellon stands on Korsarzy street, at the castle's north-west corner, beside the Bell Tower gate house. The two figures facing the city centre were unveiled in 1974, and the authors are Leonia Chmielnik and Anna Paszkiewicz.

Where are Flora and Mickiewicz in the Old Town?

The Statue of Flora stands at Plac Orła Białego: a Baroque sandstone composition in which the goddess carries a flower basket, flanked by two putti. It once adorned the attic of the Grumbkow palace and has stood on the square since 1991. The Adam Mickiewicz Monument by Sławomir Lewiński was unveiled on 3 May 1960 on Plac Mickiewicza, near Żeromski Park.
