Atmospheric places in Szczecin Old Town are market squares, squares, the shortest street and a riverside boulevard on the Oder, all within walking distance.
Seven addresses marked as places for couples: from Rynek Sienny with the Old Town Hall to Bulwar Piastowski with the Sailors' Alley. Each has a former German name and a history of destruction and rebuilding.
Where to start a walk through the Old Town in Szczecin?
Start with Rynek Sienny w Szczecinie (Hay Market), the main square of the Old Town. It is a paved, rectangular square, called Heumarkt until 1945, with the Old Town Hall standing by it. Part of the tenement houses were rebuilt in the 1990s.
The name comes from the medieval hay trade. In 1833-1835 the western frontage was built up with the exchange building, and after 1879 the role of the Old Town Hall changed. From the market you reach the other addresses on this list in a few minutes.
Which squares in the Old Town have the most interesting history?
Three squares, Nowy, Orła Białego and Mariacki, show well how former churches and markets lie under the new paving. Each was destroyed in the 20th century and redeveloped.
Rynek Nowy
Rynek Nowy w Szczecinie (New Market) is an irregular square north-east of Rynek Sienny, where eight streets meet, among them Księcia Mściwoja II, Panieńska and Wielka Odrzańska. It arose on the site of St Nicholas's church, mentioned in 1243, and after a fire it received a rebuilt frontage and exposed foundations of tenement houses.
Plac Orła Białego and the fountain
Plac Orła Białego w Szczecinie (White Eagle Square) was formerly Roßmarkt, the Horse Market, because horse fairs were held here. It is bounded by Koński Kierat Street to the north, Grodzka to the south and Staromłyńska to the west. On the square stands Fontanna Orła Białego w Szczecinie (White Eagle Fountain), the oldest Baroque fountain in Szczecin that has survived, built in 1729-1732 and started on 15 August 1732 as the first part of the Szczecin water supply. The Globe Palace also stands by the square.
Plac Mariacki
Plac Mariacki w Szczecinie (Mariacki Square) is a small rectangular square joined to Farna Street on the east. Until 1945 it was called Marienplatz, after the church of St Mary that stood here. After a fire caused by lightning in 1789, the surviving walls were pulled down in 1829, and the Mariacki Gymnasium was built in their place, today the seat of the IX General Secondary School.
Is there a street in the Old Town worth seeing despite its length?
Yes. Targ Rybny w Szczecinie (Targ Rybny, the Fish Market street) is only 49 metres long and links Rynek Nowy with Środowa Street. The roadway is paved with granite setts, and traffic is one-way.
It was originally called Targ Maślankowy, first mentioned in 1427. After 1540 it was called Targ Warzywny, and from the mid-18th century Targ Rybny. The historic name was restored in 1999, and the tenement houses were rebuilt on pre-war foundations.
Where to take an evening walk by the Oder?
Bulwar Piastowski w Szczecinie (Piastowski Boulevard) is the lower part of Nabrzeże Wieleckie, a street running along the West Oder. Before 1945 it was the main riverside street of the Old Town, and an old photograph from 1903 is captioned with the name Bollwerk.
After the war the embankment was raised by about two metres with rubble. The Sailors' Alley was marked out on the boulevard, and the monument to the cat Umbriaga stands by it. It is a good end to a route through the squares, when you want to rest by the water.
What else to see in the Old Town?
