Theatres and opera in Szczecin Old Town: Kana, Contemporary Theatre and the Opera at the Castle. Four stages for a rainy evening for two.

Four addresses in Szczecin's Old Town, from an alternative theatre to an opera stage inside the castle. All of them are tagged as places for couples and for bad weather, so they make a good starting point for an evening indoors.

Which Old Town theatres and opera stage have the longest history?

The longest continuity belongs to Opera na Zamku (Opera at the Castle), which has worked since 1956 and has been housed in the southern part of the ducal castle since 1978. An orchestra, choir and ballet company belong to the house, so the repertoire covers opera, ballet and concerts.

The same castle houses Piwnica przy Krypcie, a stage that in 2015 merged the dramatic Krypta with a castle cabaret. Krypta had existed since 1965 in the castle crypt, so two castle traditions now share one name.

Kana (teatr) (Kana Theatre) is an alternative stage founded in 1979 by Zygmunt Duczyński and his students. Since 1994 it has been based in a townhouse at Plac Piotra i Pawła 4/5, next to the church, and it won an award at the Edinburgh festival.

Teatr Współczesny (Contemporary Theatre) works inside the National Museum on Wały Chrobrego, where it runs the Main Stage and Nowe Sytuacje. The small stage, Teatr Mały, works separately on Deptak Bogusława. Check the theatre's own website for the repertoire, which changes every season.

How can you combine a theatre visit with a walk around the district?

The castle with its opera and Piwnica sits in the middle of the district, and the embankment is a few streets away. Kana waits by Plac Piotra i Pawła. For a longer stroll try Zabytki: Stare Miasto, for the whole district open Stare Miasto, and stages from across the voivodeship wait under Teatry i opera.
