Churches and monasteries in Trzebiatów: a Gothic parish church with a 90 m tower, three hospital chapels, St John's and ruins on Wyszkowo hill.

Trzebiatów is a small town with a dense set of places of worship from different periods and denominations. The old hospital chapels have changed hands, and an old hill above the Rega has kept only ruins.

Which church in Trzebiatów is the most important?

The most important is St Mary's, a Gothic hall church. It dominates the town and is the best place to begin. The other churches are smaller, and some changed users after 1945.

The Kościół Macierzyństwa Najświętszej Marii Panny w Trzebiatowie (Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary), known as St Mary's, stands at Jana Pawła II 2. In this Gothic hall of the 14th-15th century the tower rises 90 m, and the bell was cast in 1399. The furnishings are Neo-Gothic. Today the church serves as the Archdiocesan Marian Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trzebiatów. The town's founding is dated to 1277.

Which hospital chapels have survived in Trzebiatów?

Three Gothic hospital chapels survive in town, each with a different later fate. Two now serve eastern rites, and the third was converted into a house.

The Kaplica Świętego Ducha w Trzebiatowie (Chapel of the Holy Spirit) stands at Wojska Polskiego 44. In 1534 the Pomeranian estates met here, and since 1956 an Orthodox congregation has used the chapel.

The Kaplica św. Gertrudy w Trzebiatowie (St Gertrude's Chapel) is a Gothic hospital chapel of the 14th century. The town council founded it together with the hospital buildings. Since 1957 it has been the church of the Greek Catholic parish of Saints Peter and Paul.

The third, the Kaplica św. Jerzego w Trzebiatowie (St George's Chapel) at Kołobrzeska 6, was built for a leper hospital outside the town walls. Since the 19th century, after conversion, it has served as a dwelling, so you view it from the street.

What is there to see outside the centre of Trzebiatów?

Add to the route a Neo-Gothic church of the Old Lutherans and ruins on a hill above the river. One more church with the same place name stands elsewhere.

The Kościół św. Jana w Trzebiatowie (St John's Church) is a Neo-Gothic church of 1904, built for the Old Lutherans. Its form resembles a one-storey house with a steep roof, from which a slender 35 m tower rises. Since 1950 it has been a branch of the Evangelical-Augsburg parish of the Holy Trinity in Szczecin.

Above the Rega, on Wyszkowo hill, stand the Ruiny kościoła na Wyszkowie w Trzebiatowie (Ruins of the Church on Wyszkowo Hill). They are what remains of a late medieval pilgrimage church known as the Jerusalem Chapel. According to Wikipedia, a Premonstratensian nunnery was founded here in 1235. Similar places are described in an article on ruined churches in the region.

Mind the name: the Kościół Narodzenia NMP w Trzebiatowie (gmina Stargard) (Church of the Nativity) belongs to a village by Stargard and is not in the town on the Rega. It was built of fieldstone in the 15th century and renovated in 1990-1998 after devastation. Its parish centre is in Pęzino.

After the churches, see the category Zabytki: Trzebiatów. The old fortifications are compared in a text on the walls of several regional towns, and stories about their defenders are gathered in sieges and walls.
