Atmospheric places in Nowe Miasto, Szczecin: Plac Zwycięstwa, a steel bridge to Jaskółcza Island, Posejdon Center and Tobruk Square.

Nowe Miasto is the part of central Szczecin between the Old Town and the Brama Portowa gate. The places here share the tag "for couples": squares, a bridge and a former department store that are easy to cover on foot in one afternoon.

Which places in Nowe Miasto suit a walk for two?

Plac Zwycięstwa is a square of irregular, roughly rectangular shape that turns into Brama Portowa square at the level of the gate. Two churches stand beside it, and the buildings mix pre-war and post-war architecture. At the junction of Aleja Wojska Polskiego and the square stands the "Labirynt" Sculpture, a modernist fountain-sculpture of clinker bricks from 1997. It has been a ruin for years and no longer works as a fountain, so it is more an architectural curiosity than a destination in itself.

Nearby is Tobruk Square, a green square between Dworcowa, Świętego Ducha and Nowa streets, next to the Red Town Hall. Until 1945 it was known in German as Marktplatz. It holds the Anchor Monument and one of the 19th-century pumps of Szczecin.

What to see by Brama Portowa and along the Oder?

Posejdon Center at Aleja Niepodległości 60 was once a department store with a cinema, the UFA Palast, opened in 1928. Today offices fill it, and a green wall faces the Brama Portowa gate. The building has had several lives, from a department store, through the Powszechny Dom Towarowy "Posejdon", to Galeria Centrum.

On the West Oder stands the Bridge to Jaskółcza Island, a historic steel truss bridge from 1920-1921 linking Kolumba street with the island. Hermann Scholl designed it, and it is the only bridge in Szczecin that survived the Second World War. Fans of industrial heritage will enjoy the detour.

For the rest of the walk see the pages things to do in Nowe Miasto, monuments in Nowe Miasto and cemeteries and monuments in Nowe Miasto, and similar places across the region are under atmospheric places.
