Things to do in Nowe Miasto, Szczecin: the Harbour Gate, the Red Town Hall, an air-raid shelter under the station and garrison church squares.
Nowe Miasto lies between the Old Town and the main railway station and gathers sights from very different periods: a Baroque gate, a 19th-century brick town hall, bridges, monuments and underground exhibitions. It makes a good start to the day for anyone who arrived by train and has a few hours for a walk.
Which historic buildings in Nowe Miasto should you see first?
Start with the gate and the town hall, the two best-known buildings in the district, a short walk apart. Then add the post office and the church at Plac Zwycięstwa.
The Harbour Gate (Brama Portowa) is a Baroque city gate from the 18th century, once called the Berlin Gate. In the attic are a Latin text, a Prussian emblem and a view of the city. The Red Town Hall on Plac Batorego, a neo-Gothic brick building from 1875-1879, is also called the New one. On Dworcowa Street stands Post Office no. 2, a complex of red-brick buildings from 1872-1905 in German Neo-Renaissance style, still in use. All three are among the historic buildings in Nowe Miasto, and their facades are best seen from the street.
Where to shelter from the rain in Nowe Miasto?
Underground: the Underground Tourist Routes at 2 Kolumba Street are three exhibitions set up in a former German shelter beneath the main station. You can visit alone or with a group, so they suit a gap between trains. The district also has squares with churches: St Adalbert's Church is a neo-Gothic garrison church from 1906-1909 with a tower 65.5 metres tall.
Which squares, monuments and atmospheric places are in Nowe Miasto?
The district has five atmospheric places and three monuments, and together they show how the city changed. For walkers the squares and bridges are the most interesting.
Plac Zwycięstwa has pre-war and post-war buildings, two churches and the sculpture Labirynt (Labyrinth), a modernist fountain of clinker shapes from 1997, a ruin for years. Plac Tobrucki is a small square beside the Red Town Hall with an Anchor Monument and a 19th-century pump. The Posejdon Center next to the Harbour Gate was a department store with the UFA Palast cinema and is now an office block with a green wall. Over the Western Oder stands the Jaskółcza Island Bridge, a steel structure from 1920-1921, the only one in Szczecin to come out of the war intact.
Three monuments stand out. In front of the station is the Railwayman Monument from 1964, and on the green between the gate and Plac Zwycięstwa the bust of Kornel Ujejski, brought from Lviv. In the park there is the bench figure of Jan Czekanowski from 2012. The full list is on the pages for cemeteries and monuments and atmospheric places in Nowe Miasto.
Is there a memorial site in Nowe Miasto?
One: a former military necropolis on Kopernika Street, covered on its own page in a sober tone.
The garrison cemetery opened in 1846, and today a square, a fragment of the wall and old trees remain.
