Things to do in Płonia, Śmierdnica and Jezierzyce: a timber-frame church, a Gothic ruin and two walking trails, from a pond loop to 35 km.
These estates lie on the eastern edge of Szczecin, by the Płonia valley and the Szczecin Landscape Park. Two churches with very different fates stand here, and trails start from here, the shorter of which takes only a few hours.
Which churches are worth seeing in Płonia and Śmierdnica?
Płonia has a timber-frame church, while in Śmierdnica only a Gothic ruin has survived. The two places show how differently the fortunes of village churches in Szczecin have turned out.
Kościół Najświętszej Rodziny w Szczecinie (Church of the Holy Family) at ulica Klonowa 14 was built in timber-frame technique in the second half of the nineteenth century, and an older tower from the eighteenth century abuts its west wall. A linden known as the St Otto lime grows on the grounds of the former cemetery. In Śmierdnica, on ulica Nauczycielska, stands Kościół św. Mikołaja w Szczecinie (St Nicholas's Church): the ruin of a fifteenth-century Gothic church destroyed during the Second World War, which no longer serves worship.
Which trail should you choose near Płonia?
There are two routes: a short one around a pond and a very long one through the forest. Both are waymarked and free.
Szlak przez Wielecki Staw (Trail around Wielecki Staw) is a black walking trail of 6 kilometres that follows the floor of the Płonia valley between Śmierdnica and Jezierzyce. Szlak im. Bolesława Czwójdzińskiego (the Bolesław Czwójdziński Trail) is a green route of 34.8 kilometres from Klęskowo through the Beech Forest, Glinna and Kołbacz to Lake Miedwie.
