Free in Stargard means a string of parks around the Old Town: from Bolesław the Brave Park on old ramparts to Panorama Park in Zarzecze.

This is a walking selection that costs nothing: eight parks, several of them joined into the Stargard green belt, and one cemetery. If you want free ideas for the town, you can build a whole day from them. Other addresses in Stargard are on things to do in Stargard, and free places from the region are under free attractions.

How do you walk the Stargard green belt?

The planty form a ring of parks around the Old Town, stretching along the Ina river and the old fortifications. Five of them lie so close together that you pass from one to the next without stepping onto a street. It is best to go from the north-west and finish in the south.

North and west: the old ramparts

Park Bolesława Chrobrego w Stargardzie (Bolesław the Brave Park) wraps around the Old Town on the north and west and was created on former earth ramparts. Medieval walls and towers are right beside it, and the walk follows avenues of old trees. Next to it lies Park Piastowski (Piast Park), the smallest park, by the Pyrzyce Gate, with a monument of the tourist society PTTK. It is a good short pause between the walls. More about the fortifications is in the article on the Collegiate Church, whose towers are visible from many paths.

By the Ina: castle, Jagiellonian and Popiel parks

Park Zamkowy (Castle Park) lies where an early settlement once stood, behind the Białogłówka tower, and measures 2.61 hectares. In the east of the Old Town stretches Park Jagielloński w Stargardzie Szczecińskim (Jagiellonian Park): four hectares by the river with two natural monuments. In the south lies Park Popiela (Popiel Park), smaller at 1.56 hectares, where some trees are one to two centuries old. Each of the three has its own character, so a loop through all of them does not bore.

Where can you spend longer on green ground in Stargard?

Two parks lie outside the strict centre and are larger, so they suit a longer walk or a rest on a bench.

Park 3 Maja w Stargardzie (3 May Park) takes up 4.64 hectares in the very middle of town, in a block of streets that includes Wyszyńskiego and Skarbowa; it was made on the site of an old cemetery. Park Stefana Batorego (Stefan Batory Park) is seven hectares at the fork of Kościuszki and Spokojna streets, laid out in 1970 also where a cemetery once stood, this time a Protestant one. In the east, in Zarzecze, you find Park Panorama with a playground and benches, a natural choice for families with children.

Is there a free place of remembrance in Stargard?

Stary Cmentarz Komunalny w Stargardzie Szczecińskim (Old Municipal Cemetery) is the largest and oldest working necropolis in town, founded in 1910. One plot holds sappers who died clearing mines from the town in 1945. It is a working cemetery, so visit it with respect and in silence, not as part of an entertainment outing.
