Trails in Szczecin: five marked walking routes, from a short loop round Emerald Lake to a 35-kilometre trail to Lake Miedwie.

Szczecin lies beside forests, so a walking route can start almost from a city bus stop. The five trails differ in colour, length and character: short family strolls, medium loops in the Płonia valley and one trail for a full day on foot. Several run through the Beech Forest (Puszcza Bukowa).

Which trail in Szczecin should you choose for a short walk?

Three routes suit an hour or two: the yellow Family Trail, the black Pilchowo Trail and the black trail round Wielecki Staw. Each runs from a few to six kilometres.

The Family Trail is two and a half kilometres long and circles Emerald Lake in Zdroje. It leads to two viewpoints over the city, so it is the easiest pick with children. The Wielecki Staw Trail measures six kilometres and winds round a pond in the valley of the Płonia river, near Śmierdnica and Jezierzyce, by the edge of the Stare Czarnowo municipality. The shortest walk is the Pilchowo Trail: from Głębokie, under the trees of the Wkrzańska Forest, to the village of Pilchowo, a little over four kilometres. For family outings and a wet-weather alternative, see Szczecin with a child in the rain and in the park.

Which trail suits a longer hike?

For fit walkers there are two longer green trails. One runs through the forests on the city's western edge, the other leads far beyond Szczecin.

The trail through Arkoński Forest and the Warszewo Hills is about 13.8 kilometres. The route strings together three wooded areas on the city's western and northern edge, and part of it enters the Police municipality. The longest is the Bolesław Czwójdziński Trail, nearly 35 kilometres: you set out from Klęskowo, pass the Beech Forest, Glinna and Kołbacz and reach Lake Miedwie. A walk this long is planned for a whole day or divided into stages.

Where can you read about the trails of the Beech Forest?

A detailed description of the routes is in Walking trails of the Beech Forest and Szczecin, and the nature of the Oder valley in Lower Oder Valley Landscape Park and Międzyodrze: nature.

More routes across the voivodeship appear in the overview of trails, and beyond forest walks the city has plenty more to offer, listed under Szczecin.
