Monuments in Szczecin: seven places, from the Szczecin Paprykarz Monument to Napoleon Hill and the statue of Frederick II.
Szczecin's monuments tell you more about the city than information boards: some remember former rulers, others a poet, railwaymen or a local tinned fish spread. The seven addresses lie in different parts of town, so combine them with other stops on a walk.
Where in Szczecin are the monuments worth seeing on a walk around the centre?
Around the Old Town and the main station you will find three monuments that join easily into one route, with no long journeys.
The Monument to Frederick II the Great is a marble figure of the Prussian king, unveiled in 1793. Schadow drew up the design, but the monument has moved, and since 2015 you can see it in the National Museum's courtyard. By the Port Gate, on the green strip towards Zwycięstwa Square, stands the Kornel Ujejski Monument: a bronze bust of the poet by Antoni Popiel from 1901, which reached Szczecin from Lviv in 1956. In front of Szczecin Główny station, on Kolumba Street, the Railwayman Monument was unveiled in 1964 to a design by Ryszard Chachulski: a railwayman stands by the points.
Which monument in Szczecin is the most unusual?
Two stand out: the Szczecin Paprykarz Monument and Napoleon Hill. Both carry the free tag and look nothing like a classic pedestal with a bust.
The Paprykarz stands on Gryfitów Square and takes the form of a half-open tin that seems to be rolling off a production line. It was unveiled on 2 October 2020, which makes it the youngest monument on the list. Napoleon Hill is no sculpture but an earth mound that French soldiers piled up in 1808. It rises some eight metres and carries a Prussian column. Walk to it from the junction of Unii Lubelskiej and Klonowica streets.
Which monuments stand near Wojska Polskiego Avenue?
Two monuments lie near Wojska Polskiego Avenue, so you can join them into one short stretch: Piłsudski and Badetko. They honour figures important to Polish Szczecin.
The Marshal Józef Piłsudski Monument is a bronze bust unveiled in 2000 on Szarych Szeregów Square, formerly Sprzymierzonych Square, between the avenue and Wielkopolska Street. A little further, where the avenue meets Zaleskiego Street, on a green named after him stands the Telesfor Badetko Monument, an obelisk of sandstone raised in 1999 to honour a scout leader. More about the monuments of Jasne Błonia is in Jasne Błonia: plane trees, a parade ground and the Quistorp family's land, and about boulders in the Beech Forest in Erratic boulders of the Beech Forest.
Further monuments of the voivodeship are gathered in the overview of monuments, and other points on the city map are described under things to do in Szczecin.
