Townhouses in Szczecin: six historic buildings around Grunwaldzki Square and the Old Town, from Loitz House to an Art Nouveau house on św. Wojciecha.

The townhouses in the centre tell of Szczecin's burgher past. We list six addresses: five in Centrum and one in the Old Town. It makes a route of about an hour on foot, with no tickets, because you view the buildings from the street.

Where should you start looking at townhouses in Szczecin?

Easiest is Grunwaldzki Square, around which several of the houses stand. A few blocks are enough to see buildings from different decades, from the 1880s to the early twentieth century.

Right by the square, on the corner of Śląska Street, stands the August Mintz Townhouse of 1898. A pharmacy has occupied it since 1900, and its dispensing room kept the old fittings. At number 38 on the same street stands the Wilhelm Gramtz Tenement House, put up in 1892-1893. Over the gate you spot a putto, and the corner oriel carries a helmet-shaped top. The house has a twin at Rayskiego 29, and together they form the south-western side of the square.

Which townhouse in Szczecin is Art Nouveau?

You see Art Nouveau best in the house at św. Wojciecha 1. It is an early twentieth-century building in which much of the original ornament survives.

The Tenement House at św. Wojciecha 1 dates from 1902-1903 and was designed by Friedrich Liebergesell. Beyond the facade, look towards the rear wing, courtyard and fountain. For contrast, Piłsudskiego 7 was built in 1897 and has oriels and female sculptures on the third storey. Of the old eastern side of Piłsudskiego Street, it alone is left.

What are the oldest and most unusual townhouses in Szczecin?

The oldest on the list is Loitz House, a sixteenth-century building, and the most unusual is Malczewskiego 34, popularly called the Sandwich.

Loitz House (Kamienica Loitzów) at Kurkowa 1 is a late Gothic house of 1539-1547 that belonged to the Loitz family of bankers. An art school works inside, and the building is a rare trace of old burgher architecture in town. Malczewskiego 34 went up in 1885-1888 on a U-shaped plan. In its block only this one survived from before the war, and it joined the heritage register in 2004.

How do you link the townhouses into one route?

The route starts in the Old Town at Loitz House and then leads to Centrum. An hour is enough for the whole thing, and the stops around Grunwaldzki Square take longest.

On the way you can check other places: the overview of townhouses shows similar buildings in the region, and things to do in Szczecin suggests what to add to the walk. For neighbouring architecture read Palaces and townhouses of Śródmieście: from Baroque to Art Nouveau.
