Monuments in Świnoujście are Prussian coastal forts, the underground bunkers of the Vineta battery and a brick post office building from the late 19th century.
Six objects, five of them linked to the defence of the port at the mouth of the Świna. Several now have museums or exhibitions, so the list suits both a walk on your own and a longer day of sightseeing.
Which monuments in Świnoujście come from the Prussian fortress?
Of the four forts that made up Twierdza Świnoujście (Świnoujście Fortress), three survive: Angel, Gerhard and the Western Fort. The fortification complex was designed by Johann Leopold Ludwig Brese and built in the 19th century to defend the port at the mouth of the Świna. In German it was called Festung Swinemünde.
All three forts are open to visitors today, but each in a different style. The choice depends on whether you prefer an exhibition, a walk along the ramparts or underground casemates.
Fort Gerhard
Fort Gerharda w Świnoujściu (Gerhard Fort), also called the Eastern Fort, dates from 1848-1859 and has the address Ku Morzu 5. The description ranks it among the best preserved Prussian seaside artillery forts in Europe. It stands in the eastern part of the town, on the island of Wolin, near the lighthouse, and a museum operates in its redoubt. You can tour it in the role of a recruit, and getting there takes a boat trip. More about the history of the site is in the article Fort Gerhard: from a Prussian pentagon to a museum.
Angel Fort
Fort Anioła w Świnoujściu (Angel Fort) at Jachtowa 2 was built in 1854-1858. Also called Fort III or the Tower Fort, it takes the form of a three-storey brick rotunda with a terrace and an observation tower, surrounded by ramparts and a moat. It houses a museum of military architecture, exhibitions and a café.
Western Fort
Fort Zachodni w Świnoujściu (Western Fort), formerly the Westbatterie, was raised in 1856-1861 at Jachtowa 4a, in wooded surroundings near the mouth of the Świna. The Museum of the History of the Fortress operates here, with underground casemates and shelters. Jachtowa Street links the two forts, so it is easy to see them in one day.
